Description

Keynote Speaker: Ann Douglas

Ann Douglas knows what it’s like to parent a child diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Ditto with depression, anorexia, Asperger’s syndrome, and ADHD. Each of her four children has struggled with one or more conditions that fall under the “children’s mental health” umbrella. From Canada’s bestselling and trusted parenting authority comes this honest and authoritative compendium of advice for parents who are living with children who have mental health, neurodevelopmental, or behavioural challenges.

It is based on interviews with experts on children’s mental health as well as parents and young people who have lived with (or who are living with) mental illness. Drawing on her own experience and expertise, Ann Douglas shows you how to cope with worry and frustration about a child’s behaviour; how to effectively advocate for your child and work through treatments; how to manage siblings’ concerns and emotions; and, most importantly, how to thrive as a family.

About Ann:

A passionate and inspiring speaker, Ann delivers keynote addresses and leads small-group workshops at health, parenting, and education conferences across the country.

She has created and delivered parenting courses for high-profile websites such as WebMD and AOL as well as on behalf of government clients and Fortune-500 companies.

She is the national parenting columnist for Momstown.ca and the parenting columnist for The New CHEX Daily -- the CBC affiliate station in Peterborough, Ontario. And she recently teamed up with Today's Parent to produce a series of parenting advice videos.

In April 2012, Ann was one of 16 Canadians invited to Rideau Hall to discuss family policy with Canadian Governor-General David Johnston and his wife Sharon Johnston.

Workshop Sessions

Growing Resilient Children

This presentation is focused on resiliency during childhood. Resiliency is the ability of a child to bounce back from challenges and move forward with new knowledge and skills. A child’s ability to be resilient changes and has many ups and downs based on what is going on in his/her life. Children need the support of people who love them to help them learn within a safe and caring environment. There are many things that parents/caregivers can do to support resiliency in your child. This presentation offers some tangible suggestions and tips for parents to try with their children.

Presented by: Jenn Sullivan,RN BScN - Durham Region Public Health

Social Media, Online Safety and Cyberbullying

In today’s growing society, more and more students are using numerous technologies in order to communicate with others. Just as we teach our children about safety in our communities, we also need to teach our youth about safety online. Internet Safety and Cyber bullying is an information based workshop that allows participants to learn about the risks online and the connections they have to cyber bullying. Parents will learn about social networking sites, online gaming, identity theft and many other pertinent issues that affect our children. Cyber bullying will be defined; discussions around how to detect if you are a victim and what you can do if you are a victim will take place.
